Girl-group BLACKPINK made their comeback with confidence, after their 1-year vacancy. They were satisfied with the results, as all members yelled ‘This is it; when they first heard to song ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’. Will BLACKPINK, known as ‘YANG HYUN SUK’s jewel box’ be able to dominate the K-Pop scene this summer?
BLACKPINK notified their comeback on June 15 by opening a press conference at Cheongdam Cine City to celebrate the release of their new mini album, ‘SQUARE UP’. It’s their comeback in approximately 1 year, since they released ‘AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST’ last year.
On making comeback, BLACKPINK stated “We are making comeback in 1 year. We’ll do our best since our fans have waited for us for a long time, so please show love and support. We put sincerity on every single track in the album”.
BLACKPINK is just a rookie group but had an unusually year long hiatus and fans actually had some complaints on the matter. However, the members are now ready to repay the fans with high-quality music.
JENNIE stated, “We had a reality show, and we prepared many things for our album. We wanted our album to have a high degree of completion. Us members and representative YANG HYUN SUK paid attention to every little detail. We are now confident to present our product. We’ll do our best to make our fans forget about our vacancy”.
JISOO stated, “The vacancy period became an opportunity to learn how to perform better in stages. We spent more time preparing for our next performances. Also, we had time to take care and manage ourselves”.
BLACKPINK will release their first mini album since debut with this comeback. ‘SQUARE UP’ is part of the ‘SQUARE’ series BLACKPINK has been running since debut. The title of the mini album, ‘SQUARE UP’, has the meaning of ‘Let’s fight’ and ‘Let’s verse one another’, while containing the message of ‘standing tall’ with BLACKPINK’s upgrade music and concepts.
BLACKPINK’s first mini album contains a total of 4 tracks including the title song ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’, the sub-title song ‘FOREVER YOUNG’, ‘REALLY’, and ‘SEE U LATER’. The album is consisted of various genres including Hip-Hop, Dance, and R&B.
BLACKPINK explained their new album by stating, “’DDU-DU DDU-DU’ sounds like gun-shots and also feels like a spell. It’s like the album ‘SQUARE UP’ is casting a strong spell with the feeling of ‘Let’s fight’ and ‘Let’s verse one another’”. They continued, “We worked with producer TEDDY, and received a lot of inspiration while discussing about potential concepts while making the song”.
The title song ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ was written by hitmaker TEDDY, and was composed by TEDDY, 24, R.Tee, and Bekuh Boom. The song is in a Hip-Hop genre, and the lyrics express BLACKPINK’s identity by containing symbols of chic and confident women. The sub-title song ‘FOREVER YOUNG’ is a Dance song with Moombahton rhythm, which has lyrics that contains positive energy with the message, ‘Let’s spend our youth without regret’.
BLACKPINK stated, “(After hearing ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’) We said this is it. It’s was a song in a genre we’ve been longing for” and added, “It’s more powerful, tough, and more hip-hop compared to our previous releases. Our last album expressed feelings of a girl, but we wanted to display our mature side and more variety this time”.
They also expressed confidence by stating, “Our previous focus was on our feminine side, but ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ has elements of a Hip-Hop song. The rap in verses 1 and 2 became fiercer. We feel like listeners can feel a new side of us”.
On making comeback during the World Cup season, BLACKPINK stated “It’s the season when there are a lot issues, but we believe that people that have waited for us will support our music. We’re not concerned about the timing”.
BLACKPINK first made debut on August 8, 2016 with songs ‘WHISTLE’ and ‘BOOMBAYAH’, released their second album containing ‘PLAYING WITH FIRE’ and ‘STAY’, and released ‘AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST’. They achieved successful results on all their releases, becoming one of the top-class girl-groups in K-Pop.
On the question that asked BLACKPINK’s strengths, the members stated, “We don’t try to define our color. We try to blend our color every time we make comeback. It’s our priority to focus on our tasks and activities”.
Their goal is to enjoy rather than be under pressure on making a comeback. The members explained, “We were under pressure when we first made debut, but now we’re off that and enjoy our new challenges. It would feel great if we do well on the charts, but it will feel better if people say ‘BLACKPINK made this into their own as usual’”.
They also displayed their expectations on the release of their album by stating, “We found peace while shooting our first reality program. We had time to heal ourselves during the vacancy period. We are now ready to perform the music we’ve been preparing with sincerity, and happy to present ourselves with a degree of completion. I’m looking forward to 6 PM today”.
BLACKPINK will release their new album today at 6 PM and kick off promotion activities by making appearances in MBC ‘Show! Music Core’ on the 16th and SBS ‘Inkigayo’ on the 17th.
