One day in July. The Han River overflowed with unprecedented rainy season, and on a day when a gentle breeze blew, which might have been summer or already autumn, we faced Jisoo. And when I asked her how she felt now that the world has been turning into ‘BLACKPINK’ since the release of their new song “How You Like That”, she expressed her gratitude and said she would not be swept away by public acclaim. She said it is a way to repay love and a way which BLACKPINK walks. A flexible attitude that moves freely between what the world wants and what she wants to show herself. Jisoo wore Dior that day, and we were especially in a hurry to welcome autumn.

I felt new and happy to hear that you were able to wear Dior and decorate the cover of DAZED.

It’s the same. I like the unique character of DAZED, so I really wanted to be with you. And I was so excited to be with Dior too.

How did the shoot go? I felt a different autumn when I saw you walking through a fairy tale set with flowers all over the place, in a blue and neat Dior.

I thought about what I should do because I had to make Dior’s own color and express a image that goes well with DAZED. I’ve been looking for this and that and prepared hard.

How was Bobby Bag, which you uploaded to your personal Instagram account and showed your affection for?

Bobby is also the name of Monsieur Dior’s dog. I was looking forward to hearing that Bobby Bag was coming out, because Dior was showing a new bag after a long time. It was as lovely and cute as its name. I think it’s a good item to match on a daily basis as well as on a stylish basis.

It’s the first work as a muse of Dior fashion. I think it’s a special moment for Jisoo.

I’ve been a fan of Dior for a long time, and I think the strength behind the elegance is the charm of Dior. At first glance, I look calm, but I’m a charismatic person on stage, so I thought I could create synergy. And unlike just looking at it, Dior has a new charm when you wear it and look in the mirror. I wanted to express a powerful attitude with a graceful outfit in front of the camera today.

You’re really busy these days right? ‘How You Like That’ music video which was released on June 26th, broke the Guinness record and it was ranked 33rd in the US Billboard Hot 100 and was 20th on the UK chart. It is a record that only BLACKPINK can achieve. How did you feel? What kind of days are you spending…?

I’m freaking out. (Laughs) And I try not to be nervous about the scores (charts). I think it’s a moment of weighing and not missing what we’re pursuing. When I see positive reactions, I believe it would be okay to continue what we’re pursuing as BLACKPINK. I also have a mission to show cooler looks.

Those are really nice words.

Like black and pink, they have opposite charms, but harmonious. This is the look I personally pursue as well, and also as a BLACKPINK member.

Apart from the grades (charts), BLACKPINK can stand out because of their irreplaceable style and attitude. The ‘How You Like That’ music video and the hanbok worn on the first music show stage were simply modern and new. There was also a positive response from the public.

I really liked the hanbok styling, too. Personally, the most impressive scene in all BLACKPINK’s music videos is the traditional Korean tile scene of “DDU-DU DDU-DU”. Since we are Korean musicians and now we are a group that communicates globally, we want to show our culture in our own cool way. Fans from other countries saw the Korean side and said, “Korean visuals are so cool!” I was proud and happy. We were excited about the hanbok styling, so we suggested styling, makeup, hair, and finger nail. We’ve tried something new with our trustworthy staffs.

“Do you know how great it is that each of the four members of BLACKPINK took a official portrait wearing a brand clothing as an ambassador? It was the first pleasant moment I saw while working as an Asian fashion editor for 20 years. I was so proud that four wonderful Eastern girls took over high fashion world in Europe and America. Jisoo wore Dior then, too.” Before today’s interview, Lee Hyun-beom, editor-in-chief of DAZED affirmed to me. He asked me if I know how great and global what BLACKPINK has done. What do you think as the main character?

It’s such an honor. (Laughs) The moment I was shooting the official portrait remains a good memory. At that time, it was very fortunate that we could show our power by wearing different brands. Even though we wore different brands of accessories, we looked like a team. I thought we were working with a brand that fits well with each other, and we were doing well.

I heard that BLACKPINK’s full album will be released in October. Can you give us a hint? I also heard about the collaboration with an amazing musician. (This interview was held in late July. BLACKPINK released “Ice Cream,” a collaboration with Selena Gomez on August 28, and the music video has been rocking the world with surpassing 100M views only in a day and a half.)

We want to show more solidity as BLACKPINK through a full album. We’ll show a lot of different charms in this album. The musician we’ll collaborate with, has been our favorite artist since we were trainees. She’s a world-class woman. We’re planning to show a bright side of BLACKPINK’s songs that goes well with the season as they’ll come out in summer. It will be an interesting album in many ways.

By the way, you had a fan signing event through a video call yesterday, right? Even though the situation is sad, I thought that BLACKPINK was on the bandwagon because it is a new phase that artists should face.

It’s the digital age. Since we can’t face our fans in this era, we use SNS more enthusiastically. We try to communicate more often, post more daily pictures, and give hints to our fans through SNS. It’s been a year and a half since we last made a comeback, so we’re working harder.

I have a question. What is Jisoo’s definition of a cool person?

To acknowledge others. People are all different. I don’t think she/he’s cool, not to understand it. I also want to be a person who understands the differences. When I face something different from what I think, I come up with a hundred thoughts. Why is she/he acting like that? I try to understand and accept it as much as I can.

You are definitely a global icon. What if you could send a message of courage to Blinks and the young people who want to be the second ‘Jisoo’?

I’m at the center of my life. It’s not like being selfish or self-centered. I’m setting myself up to the standard of what I think would be better. I think it’s better than thinking, “He/She did this, so I’m going to copy him/her.” I sometimes envy others, but I try to do it in my own style. I would be so happy to hear that a person who wants to be like me has completed his or her own cool identity by referring to me.

Is there anything you’re particularly interested in these days? Something you’re hooked on to.

I often listen to classical music. There are times when I’m busy and tired, when that happens, I look for piano music rather than a song with lyrics. When I need a moment of silence, it’s a element that guides me to a peaceful world. (laughs)

Then, what kind of moment is reading in Jisoo’s life? I’ve heard that you’ve read some high-quality books such as “Me Before You,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Norwegian Wood”, and “1Q84.”

Reading is one of my stress-relieving hobbies. Hobby is something you have to make time for anyway. I try to read books even when I’m sleepy or tired. I can’t think of anything else when I read. There’s a saying, “Books are food for thought.” Especially when I’m busy like these days, I can relate to it more. Reading books makes my mind calm.

Is there anything else you want to try?

I have no objection to learning new things and challenging them. I think a new opportunity is good luck and enjoy it. I do my best with anticipation and excitement if it’s something new, like shooting a photo for DAZED’s cover story. Even if I fail, I don’t feel bad. It’s not a failure. I’m sure there’s something to learn since it was my first challenge.

Lastly, is there any goal that you want to achieve when you meet DAZED next time?

First of all, I hope I look natural on the cover and the cover story. I’d like to hear that Jisoo expressed DAZED’s individuality and Dior well. Rather than just me coming out well, I want to make a product that fits the concept of this pictorial. And I’d like to shoot the next pictorial in a more “Dazed” way, would that be okay?
